Hepatitis A outbreak in Kyiv

Kyiv is going through a record outbreak of hepatitis A: about 300 people are sick.

The overall incidence rate the current year increased by 23-25%, compared to previous year. The incidence of hepatitis A in children actually increased twice. It is the biggest outbreak in 8 years, since 2006.

According to the doctors, this year the residents of Left bank of Dnieper are under biggest risk. Most of the cases are recorded in Dniprovsky, Desnyansky and Darnytsky districts.

Hepatitis A is an acute infectious disease of the liver caused by the hepatitis A virus. Many cases have few or no symptoms, especially in the young. It is usually spread by eating or drinking food or water contaminated with infected feces.

Hepatitis A can be prevented by vaccination, good hygiene, and sanitation. Washing and disinfecting your hands and your food should prevent you from catching the infection.
