WHat things could we add or change regarding profiles that would make the site more friendly and useful?

All the suggestions are excellent, and would help people to become better acquainted even if they don't meet in real life. The site has so many familiar names but I don't feel that I know any of them.

For the record, my nearest metro is Lukyanivska; I would tell you my number if I knew it; my favourite "restaurant" is a close call between the Besarabskii Rynok Puzata Hata and Pizza Uno by Zolotye Vorota; I'm an editor and translator at a law firm, and am originally from Sussex, England.

I live AT MINSKA, Puzata Hata is definitely my favorite restaurant, I am a Teacher of Business (Management and HR primarily) and English, plus I do recruiting of bi-lingual staff and teachers for business and schools.  I was born in Memphis, Tennessee (home of Elvis Presley), USA. My siginifcant other is Irina.  I would put my Skype on now but will have to add it later this evening since I forget whether I used E, Ed or Ed_ in the name.  Search for me I bet I am the only Ed Cocks you will find in Kyiv, whatcha' think?

I have Skype on my computer but have never used it, I have enough keeping up with people I know on MSN, Yahoo and ICQ messengers, enabling another messenger service for me seems pointless.  Those that have asked for my phone number have it, but I won't be publishing it on the site.  All the other information written is in my "Intro Thread" so I have no problem with it being put anywhere anyone wants it.

When and if it is updated I will complete it so anyone who wants to know anything about me can find it (within reason).  If it is not updated then people will have the labourious task of finding my thread in the Introductions section I guess.   Undecided

Any information provided or enabled here should certainly be optional.  No one has to put in anything and can also choose to be a "lurker" and hide.  The ONLY purpose(s) would be to enhance the utility of the site and set the proper tone for our virtual  community.

Maybe the information could only be available to, and about, those with a post-count of 5 or more? That way it only applies to genuine members of the expat community.

I suggest 20 or 25.  Admin will need to readjust the ranks and levels soon anyway as we get busier.  But, still the concept is solid.  Good thought!

I agree with you completely.  Odessa has no Metro though, I won't use Skype and my mobile you and others already have via PM.  It only leaves me with what I put in my Intro Thread.   Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

I would be nice if the profile which already existed were even partially filled in.  There are many genderless and homeless (ie region of Ukraine) members of this forum   Huh

That said, the forum has taken on a more "community and adult" feel to it recently and I am sure if the regular posters get behind it, newcomers will follow suit when signing up.

I would have no problem with my mobile, msn, yahoo or ICQ details being shown to somebody who has posted more than 25 times, (they all have the ability to block if necessary after all  Cheesy).  Those in Odessa who have asked for it have it regardless of post numbers (although most if not all are over 25 posts here) and then in Kyiv - you have it Ed, but again there isn't a poster with more than 25 posts I would not give it to regardless of location amongst the exisiting members.  Smiley

There is also a facility to add buddies in the profile section, maybe they could be shown only to those you add to your buddy list.................incase you have a poster with 25 or more posts with a very bad karma  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

As many of you probably figured out I am only can be called an expat in a certain sense of the word.
I was born in Ukraine but spent a lot of time outside of the country in a few different countries really.
So I don't even know where I belong and I guess I am an expat wherever I go. Which is in a sense exciting and fun. Anyway following the leaders :
Nearest Metro - Kharkivs'ka
Skype - Will add mine to my profile next week.
Cell Phone- Don't know yet Smiley Will know in a week ).
Favorite Restaurant - Yet to discover my favorite in Kiev. have been to many and must say was not impressed .To me prices are unreasonably high considering quality of food and service provided.
I used to like Arizona long ago. Now I don't even know if they are still in business.
Employment -As of last month voluntarily unemployed. Looking. As of last month Banking/Mortgage/Client Management.
Job Title - Quality Control Analyst in Mortgage division of a Bank.
Home Country- USA
Significant Other - Married (7 years).

That would be cool if we could make it only available to people with a certain Karma rating or on our buddies list.  You getting all that Admin?   Grin

Nick, you should try your Skype a couple of times. My beloved uses it to keep in touch with those who have it in Ukraine and the sound quality is excellent. The video isn't too bad either, if you use that option. I do not use it personally (you know why) but from what I have seen, Skype is better than ICQ, MSM and Yahoo, especially running under slow connection speeds.

It is possible that the audio coding and codecs used within the various programs may play some part in the sound/video quality but, like you, I am no technophobe.

I second the usage of Skype.  I have two hour conversations with my father back in the states for free.  Well, free other than my DSL and computer costs, which I had anyway.  Mine is excellent quality.
