For those who have not already made it to Moscow on the express train. The Odessa to Moscow train stops in Kyiv. There are also new express trains between Moscow and Kyiv so Moscow is within easy reach.

It is not expensive at all, even in local terms. Less than 100 Hrynva if I am not mistaken. 4 beds in the compartment. 1st class a little bit more with 2 beds.

Correction - the fare was from Odessa to Kyiv with night train.

The last time I took the train from Moscow to Odessa it was $120 for a birth in a 4 birth compartment.  I have to admit it was 2006 so it may have gone up since then.  I normally fly these days, but at the time I had some items which I wanted to get to Odessa without the more "stringent" customs checks of of flying.  Things may well have tightened up customs wise on the train since then.  Undecided

Perhaps it is more expensive to go from Moscow to Odessa than from Odessa to Moscow? Compared to what you paid for the ticket, riding in a 4 berth compartment as I did, I am quite sure I paid much less although I only went to Kyiv. My fare should have been 50% of yours or so. Perhaps you pay some extra fees when crossing a border on a train ride? Did you take the Odessa - Moscow express or regular train? It is a reliable way of travel especially with the night train leaving Odessa very late (after midnight) arriving in Kyiv in the morning.  Smiley
