Sometime this summer I have to leave Ukraine briefly to avoid having to go through ghastly registration. I'd like to make a long weekend of it, so does anyone know of a town, say, less than 18 hours away from Kyiv (Romania, Hungary, Moldova, Poland) that is worth a visit?

Thanks.

Will you go by car?If yes, you can go to Poland to see beautiful small city Kazimierz Dolny (from Kiev it's about 7 hrs of driving, near Lublin, http://www.kazimierz-news.com.pl/wersjaa.html) or Cracow (about 10 hrs of driving). For sure you'll find some nice places in Hungary, like for example famous of its wines Eger area (about 12 hrs of driving).Rather try to avoid travelling to Moldova.

Great long weekend trips from Kyiv (long weekend = 4 days):

    Budapest
    Krakow
    Warsaw
    Chisnau
    Sofia
    Komyanets-Podilski
    Ivano-Frankivsk
    Lviv
    Odessa
Crimea (hey - how you gonna go home and tell people you never got there?)

Pardon my spelling and include it as an area type of visit.  I love old castles and historical stuff.

Thanks for all your ideas - enough to want to make me quit my job and go to all of them. Tbilisi sounds great if I can find a reasonable fare, as does Hungary. Keep the ideas coming!

I used Warsaw a couple of times for this purpose. There is a direct train from Kiev which takes you 18 hours. It is the cheapest option I found last year, but I am not sure it still is. Cost me about 60€ last year. You can also take a bus to Lublin, but that is not much cheaper and definitely less comfortable (and no matter what happens, NEVER use the toilets at Yagodin border crossing  Shocked!!)

Actually, I must say the idea of going to Tbilisi for some days also sounds very attractive to me. I assume EU-residents need a visa for that?

I would love to go to Tbilisi, but a plane journey and visa seems a bit excessive for a trip where I'll essentially only be in a place for a day. Is Warsaw closer than Budapest and Bucharest?

Jonathan, as far as I am aware, EEC citizens enjoy visa-free entry into Georgia.

See:  http://www.mfa.gov.ge/index.php?sec_id=467&lang_id=ENG

You can fly Georgian National Airways for about €145 return which is, of course, a little pricey for a one day trip. I cannot see how you can do it in a day since the flights depart KBP at 17:25 hours. The return flight is always two days later at 15:15, necessitating a 2 night stay.

I have not tried any other airlines for both tariffs and timetables.

If you do go - wonderful people, great sights and superb local cuisine! Enjoy!
