Budapest.

So I'm off to Hungary in a few weeks....

I'm taking a four-day trip to Budapest (a day each way on the train, and two days sightseeing). Has anyone been there? What places would you recommend? Any problems/places to avoid?

I am a regular visitor Jon.

Buda has everything you would expect of a City Centre (good Chinese Restaurant near the shopping centre in the centre, about 300 meters from McDonalds and opposite a strip club called Maralyns).

Pest (The other side of te river) has managed to maintain some archetectural integrety compared to Buda which is an unusual mix of old and new.

The airport (if you are flying) is about 30 minutes from the centre of Buda and you will pass numerous hotels (Thistle, Novotel etc etc on the main drag from the aiport to the centre).

Never been in by train.  It is a great little city though (which is why I am a regular there).

Was there about 12 years back and was a really great place, the Parliament building on the river is really great, I recommend you take one of the boat trips.

Very strange language though!!!! Not Slavic so like me you probably will understand nothing that the locals say!

When you fly in to Budapest there is a good tourist information centre at the airport staffed by people wearing badges relating to country flags of the languages they speak.  Almost every taxi driver at the airport speaks English and the fares are calculatd at the airport to the address/hotel you are going to (they are zoned and this information is freely available) so there is no chance of being ripped off as you know the cost from zone to zone before you get into the taxi. 

Maybe the same system is in effect at the train station?

Whilst emptying my briefcase I found some tourist guides I picked up at the airport when last in Budapest (the things you do when waiting for a plane  )

The life of a translator is a humble one, I'll be on the train, although am treating myself to a kupe as I am massively in need of a rest. Thanks for the link, I'll check it out later today - parliament looks beautiful, and the outside sauna/spa looks too good to miss!
