EU publishes airlines blacklist

The EU says the banned airlines do not meet minimum safety requirements
The European Union has issued a list of blacklisted airlines banned from travelling into its airspace due to fears over their safety standards.

The list includes all airlines from Indonesia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sierra Leone.

The list is also intended to warn European travellers against using certain carriers when outside Europe.

The EU's Air Safety Committee rejected appeals from three Indonesian airlines for their ban to be lifted.

"The Indonesia authorities have still not developed and implemented an efficient oversight programme on any of the carriers under their regulatory control," the commission said in a statement.

On Thursday, a pilot for the Garuda airline was charged with negligence after an accident last year in which his plane slid off the runway at Yogyakarta airport, killing 21 people onboard.

In May, the airline was declared fit to fly by the International Air Transport Association, which it hoped would lead to the EU easing their ban.

The EU's transport chief, Antonio Tajani, said the commission would continue to carefully monitor airline safety standards.

"This is another important step in the continuous commission effort to enhance civil aviation safety, in the interest of all passengers," he said.

Other airlines listed on the updated blacklist include three from Ukraine and several from Kyrgyzstan.

The West African state of Gabon has also been added to the list, though two carriers who already operate flights into Europe - Gabon Airlines and Afrijet - will be allowed to continue, but not expand, their services.
