Bag charge plan hits US airline American said it hoped to raise several hundred million dollars in new fees American Airlines is to become the first major US carrier to charge passengers to check in a first bag.
The new fee of $15 (£7.50) comes as US airlines struggle with soaring fuel costs and a slumping economy.
The airline says it will also cut a number of its domestic flights and get rid of older, fuel-guzzling jets.
International travellers will be exempt from the fee. American joined other US carriers last month in charging $25 for a second checked bag.
Shares in AMR, the owner of American Airlines, tumbled by more than 24% to $6.22 on the news.
Aviation industry analyst Terry Trippler said that it was inevitable airlines would look to offset higher costs and boost their profits.
"When people say they are 'nickel and diming', I disagree," said Mr Trippler.
"This is survival. They need to do what they can."
Airline woes
Representatives from several other big US airlines said they were considering charging passengers for the first checked bag as well.
A number of US airlines have gone out of business or filed for bankruptcy this year.
American Airlines said rising fuel prices had increased its costs by nearly $3bn since the start of the year.
On Thursday, the price of crude oil climbed to a new record of more than $135 a barrel.
American Airlines-owner AMR made a net loss of $328m in the first three months of this year, compared with a profit of $81m a year earlier, and said the swing into the red was mostly down to high aviation fuel costs.
American said it hoped to raise "several hundred million dollars" from the luggage fee and other new charges.
Domestic flights are to be cut by 12% and thousands of job cuts are expected, says the BBC's Jonathan Beale in Washington.
At the same time, the company will retire some 75 aircraft from its fleet, focusing on the least efficient planes.

I've just been to the Wizzair website, and had a look at prices for a trip to Odessa and back in July. As the prices are ridiculously cheap, surely there must be a catch?

I Expect Your Correct Ed,the Proposal of £50 One Way Luton-Kiev is Very Cheap. B.A. Continue to Dominate "Fortress Heathrow",Despite claiming Fuel Prices are Crippling Their Profits. British Airways profits soar 45% BA is predicting tough times ahead for the airline industry British Airways has reported a 45% rise in annual profits but warned that economic uncertainty and high fuel costs pose challenges. BA made a profit of £883m in the year to 31 March, which BA boss Willie Walsh called an "outstanding" result.

Well, SteveHya, you selected a Saturday, the most expensive day of the week to fly! Single fares should never be assumed to cost half of the return fare.
Two tips - booking direct with the airline is unlikely to be the cheapest option - try and be flexible with your date
Using the above tips, I got these:

The low cost airlines are not safe. They have to cut corners on something with such low prices (maintenance) and operating old planes. Better safe than sorrow. The Baltic Airline is good for international flights connecting via Riga as well as LOT via Warschaw. The two last "safe" bargains around.

Experienced business travellers know to schedule travel on Tuesday and Wednesday, the two cheapest days of the week. Everyone should know by now that staying over a Saturday night also is a big help.

Budget Airlines have been operating around Europe quite safely and successfully for about 10 years.
You seem to be concerned about safety, maybe you can remind me of the last accident concerning a Budget Airline carrier?

I swear by Lufthansa but I'm now worried. They had a real tough time in 1944 Also, note how Aeroflot get a page all by their own
