It seems that Ukraine will finally have a low cost airline :

http://wizzair.com/about_us/news/?language=ES#wiz8sd0b

International destinations should become available before the end of the year.

I just spoke to this company and the fair from Odessa to Kyiv one way is 48 UAH - sounded incredibly low, so I asked again "$48?" - "No 48 UAH".  If it turns out to be truely 48 UAH my trips to Kyiv will be by air instead of driving in future.

I asked about flights to London and although the guy on the end of the phone had nothing in writing about it he stated the figure under discussion internally was 200 UAH one way......again incredibly low.

First flights begin 11th July internally but tickets are on sale now.  Smiley

They also do e-tickets and e-payments via the internet with Visa and Mastercard  Smiley Smiley Shocked

It's true, folks!

As with other low cost airlines, you have to play around with the dates to get the best offer.

Now Ed and others will be able to visit Odessa often! Naturally, the Odessa folks will be able to visit the capital more frequently and see something other than the British Embassy!  Smiley

How do I get to this page on the Internet?

Cannot find the fares from their homepage.  Tired of getting into arguments on this and having to find this page on here.  Now people are saying it is only the Odessa-Kyiv leg and "it's impossible" to buy a ticket for Kyiv to Odessa at that price.

Sigh.

Also, just noticed this:

"Hungarian low-cost air carrier Wizz Air is reported to be on the brink of entering the Ukrainian market in a move which analysts have labelled as a potential new stage in the development of the Ukrainian air market. As a result of the arrival of the first budget airline on the Ukrainian market, connections with the rest of Europe are expected to intensify and traditional carriers may be forced to lower their tariffs, a process which has already been observed repeatedly in neighbouring countries. The first flights are expected to begin in June from Ukraine’s southern city of Mykolayiv to London’s Luton airport, according to the head of Mykolayiv airport, Andriy Keyan. Officials at Kyiv’s Boryspil and Zhulyany airports were also reportedly in talks on opening flights with Wizz Air.

Mr. Keyan said that at kickoff, tickets to London would cost EUR 30, but later the price would rise to EUR 80, including all fees and taxes, which is still far below the lowest rates now available on traditional carriers. Wizz Air has already hired local senior managers and is looking for pilots, stewards and administrators, said a source at Edelweiss Management Consulting, a recruitment company working on the project."

from Business Ukraine, April 14th edition.

Did this happen I wonder?

The extract that you mention is from Ukraine Business and is no longer valid on the short term. In mid term they indeed plan to fly to Nikolaev too.

From now on it will be as easy (and cheap ) for Odessa expats to attend Expat meetings in Kiev
as it is for Kiev expats to spend a day or two at the seaside in sunny Odessa.

Although with petrol prices going up and up and up - you might as well make hay while the
sun shines as I cannot see no frills airlines being immune from the oil price squeeze for
much longer.  Wink

Don't know if they have the full schedule up but it seems they fly from Kiev every 3rd Tuesday as long as the wind is from the North. If this is all, they should rename it Fizz Air.
