The German airline Germanwings plans to open two new routes to Ukraine in the near future, the Interfax-Ukraine news agency reported Thursday.

"Germanwings has submitted an application for the flights to the State Aviation Administration. We're considering it," said Oleksandr Davydov, the chief of the State Aviation Administration of Ukraine.

"The two routes are Kiev-Berlin and Kiev-Cologne," Davydov said.

Cologne-based Germanwings was founded in 2002 and has a fleet of 27 Airbus aircraft. Its main routes are to East and West Europe.

Ukraine Government in Negotiations with Low-Cost German Air Carrier

The Ukrainian government is currently in discussions with a low-cost German air carrier with respect to its entry into the domestic market. "Within a month there will be, it seems the German company will make its decision," commented Ukrainian Transport Minister Yosyp Vinskiy. The ministry is also conducting talks with an Arab budget carrier concerning its prospects for launching operations in Ukraine.

If negotiations are successful, the German carrier would become the second low-cost foreign airline (after Hungarian company Wizz Air) to enter the Ukrainian market. It is scheduled to start operating in Ukraine this month. Ukraine's air passenger market has grown dramatically in recent years, with a growth of 30 percent forecast for the year 2008 alone. The highly-regulated sector is currently dominated by a handful of Ukrainian airlines, which charge rates that are up to three times more expensive than the ticket prices offered by budget carriers for similar flight distances.
