Battle to save 37 Ukraine miners

 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7443107.stm

Rescuers initially reached 625m but could go no further
Rescue teams in Ukraine are battling to save 37 miners believed to be trapped underground after a gas explosion.

The rescuers are trying to reach the men through a shaft that has been damaged by the blast and are racing against time amid fears of flooding.

Rescuers at the coal mine in the eastern Donetsk region said they had heard voices when they reached 625m.

The miners were carrying out work to improve safety, the BBC's Gabriel Gatehouse reports from Kiev.

Gas explosions happen frequently in Ukraine's mines. Three blasts in the region late last year killed more than 100 men.

Families gather

"The fate of 37 people who were in the mine when the explosion took place... remains unknown," said Andriy Bondarenko, the regional head of the emergency situations ministry.

Deputy Prime Minister Olexander Turchinov said that underground water would flood the mine within a few hours, the Interfax news agency reported.

A further five people were injured outside the mine in the blast that damaged buildings on the surface, officials said.

The leader of the independent miner's union, Mikhailo Volynets, was pessimistic about the chances for the trapped men.

"If people were injured outside the mine, it is hard to imagine that people survived inside," he said.

Rescuers reached 625m (2,050 feet) but could not go any further, Mr Turchinov, who is heading the government committee investigating the accident, told a news conference.

He said rescuers could hear voices coming from about 700m.

The blast occurred at about 0500 (0200 GMT) 1,000m below the surface of the Karl Marx mine in Yenakiyevo, 60km (37 miles) north-east of the regional capital Donetsk.

Families of the trapped men gathered outside the complex to await news.

Work was suspended at 20 mines in the region following an explosion on 23 May that killed 11 people.

Ukrainian coal miners found alive

 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7443107.stm

Rescuers are struggling to reach areas where the miners are thought to be
Most of the miners trapped after a gas explosion at a pit in Ukraine have been found alive, officials say.

Rescuers made contact with the 21 men on Monday, and are in the process of bringing them to the surface. Two others made it out alive earlier.

But the race to reach another 14 still trapped underground continues, amid fears that the mine, in the eastern Donetsk region, may soon be flooded.

There are unconfirmed reports that one of the 14 has been found, and is dead.

Explosions are frequent in Ukraine's mines. Three blasts in the region late last year killed more than 100 men.

Safety work

The Karl Marx mine in Yenakiyevo, 60km (37 miles) north-east of the regional capital Donetsk, had officially been closed because of safety fears.

The miners were carrying out safety improvements when the latest explosion occurred.

The rescuers found the first two survivors at 750m (2,460 feet). They were not able to reach them until 24 hours after the accident.

There were unconfirmed reports that a third miner had been located in the same area, but showed no signs of life.

The other 34 miners were thought to be located much deeper, at 1,000m.

Ukrainian safety officials said rescue teams sent down a shaft had found 21 survivors, and were slowly bringing them to the surface.

The fate of the others was unknown.

Deputy Prime Minister Olexander Turchinov said underground water would flood the mine within a few hours.

Families gather

The blast occurred early on Sunday, 1,000m below the surface of the 110-year-old mine.

Five people outside the mine were reportedly injured by the blast.

The fact that most of the those trapped survived came as a surprise, after the leader of the independent miners' union, Mikhailo Volynets, had said: "If people were injured outside the mine, it is hard to imagine that people survived inside."

Families of the missing men gathered outside the complex to await news.

Accidents are common in Ukraine's creaking mine network. Work was suspended at 20 mines in the region following an explosion on 23 May that killed 11 people.
