100 Greatest Ukrainians

The INTER TV Channel is going to start the new show 100 Greatest Ukrainians based on the famous BBC TV format 100 Greatest Britons.

The main idea of the show is to conduct a vote to determine whom the general public considers the 100 Greatest Ukrainians of all time. We will see several talk shows during 2007-2008 season.

I think it is a good moment to find out your nominations for the, let say, international edition of the 100 Greatest Ukrainians list. It would be interesting to compare your list with the one from the public vote in Ukraine. Here we have chance to select more internationally known figures with Ukrainian roots and present the "outside view" of the subject. The "first sight" is very often works well in such cases. In the same time all of you already familiar with Ukraine and Ukrainian culture & history. Such combination could make the result even more interesting.

So, please. join the vote of the 100 Greatest Ukrainians (Expat Editon) in this topic.

Is the programme linked to the book "100 Znamenitykh Lyudei Ukrainy"? It takes the form of a hundred short biographies, with no 'winner' as they are listed alphabetically. I recommend it, it made really good reading while I was writing my dissertation - Mazepa and Mohyla when doing research for example, and Vakarchuk and Shevchenko for break-times!

Well surely by all living here we know enough Ukrainians to make our choices without a list? If not, try the book (I think I bought it from the bookshop next to the Kafka near Universytet metro).

If were including historical characters.
Then theirs no surprise as to who my greatest Cossack ( Ops I mean greatest Ukrainian ) is going to be - none other than Taras Bulba.
A legendary character made famous by the russian author Nikolai Gogol - you probably recall the film where Taras and his cossacks - after helping the Poles repel the Ottoman invasion of Ukraine - is betrayed by the Polish king who turns his cannon on the cossacks. Swearing revenge against the Poles, Taras chops off the Polish kings hand with his sword and vows to drive the Poles out of Ukraine.
So begins the long bitter struggle against the Poles with tales of love and betrayal as one of Taras's sons is seduced by the daughter of the Polish governor of Dubno.

Anyway a great ripping yarn of daring do with those vagabonds of the Steppes in the 17th century.

If anyone knows where to get a copy of the Taras Bulba book and/or movie, please let me know.  I tried to find the movie in the US a few years ago but had no luck.  I was going to swing by the bookstore mentioned above and see what they had in English but if anyone has any other suggestions where interesting reads (in English) can be obtained, please post the info.

No idea about the book Taras Bulba but here is a snippet from years ago that I saved when I thought I was going to end up in Kyiv rather than Odessa!

There is an English language bookstore just off of Evropeiska Ploshcha, on Grushevskoho, just past the Hotel Dnipro. They also operate a booth in the book market that is located by Hotel Salyut in the pedestrian underpass.

Whether that information is still the case, I couldn't say. Alternatively, this was in my browser favourites -
