Phelps the record breaker
American swimming sensation secures eighth gold
Last Updated 17th August 2008

 http://www.skysports.com/olympics/story/0,23911,14947_3997569,00.html

Michael Phelps claimed his record-breaking eighth gold medal of the Beijing Olympics after the USA won the 4x100 metres medley relay.

The swimming sensation swam a powerful butterfly leg as the American quartet - completed by Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen and Jason Lezak - stormed to glory ahead of Australia and Japan in a time of 3:29.34 to break the world record by 1.34 seconds and complete his astounding achievement.

Phelps has now eclipsed Mark Spitz's record of seven golds at a single Olympics - set in Munich in 1972 - but it was far from easy as he went into the water trailing as Japan led at halfway.

Great Job for the Uk!  Don't they usually place between Kazakstan and Hunduras in the medal count?

I was really giving the UK a compliment.  I've never seen the UK so high in the medal count in any previous olympics.

The word series is getting more appropriate every year.  There are now players from throughout Latin America, Japan, Korea, Taiwan playing in MLB.

Ukrainian silver medalist in doping investigation

http://www.unian.net/eng/news/news-268202.html

Lyudmila Blonska of Ukraine is under investigation for a positive doping test and could be stripped of her silver medal in the Olympic heptathlon, according to AP.

The International Olympic Committee says it has opened a disciplinary procedure into Blonska, who finished second behind fellow Ukrainian Nataliia Dobrynska last Saturday.

The IOC disciplinary commission and executive board are expected to rule on the case Thursday.

If found guilty of a doping offense, she would lose her medal and be expelled from the games.

Video - Bolt blasts into Olympic history
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympics/athletics/7572131.stm

Jamaica's Usain Bolt added the 200m crown to his Olympic 100m title in an incredible new world record time of 19.30 seconds in Beijing.

The 21-year-old, who won the 100m title in a world record of 9.69 secs, powered past the field to cross the line and smash Michael Johnson's mark of 19.32.

Churandy Martina of Netherlands Antilles took silver with defending champion American Shawn Crawford third.

Great Britain's Christian Malcolm clocked 20.40 secs for sixth place.

American Wallace Spearmon had crossed the line in the silver medal position but was later disqualified for stepping out of his lane.

Bolt told the BBC after his sensational win: "It's great. I have a great feeling.

"This is a dream come true. You come out every day to be a champion and I'm just happy."

Blonska under probe for drugs, Ukrainian may lose silver
UKRAINIAN hepathlete Lyudmila Blonska is under investigation for a positive doping test and could be stripped of her silver medal in the Olympic heptathlon and banned for life.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said yesterday that they had opened a disciplinary procedure into Blonska, who finished second behind compatriot Nataliia Dobrynska last Saturday.

The IOC disciplinary commission and executive board are expected to rule on the case today, and if the test is confirmed, Blonska would become a repeat offender and kicked out of the sport forever.
The 30-year-old Ukrainian served a doping suspension for the steroid stanozolol between 2003 and 2005.

An IOC official said yesterday: “There has been an adverse finding in her A sample against her (Blonska).”
