Riddle me a riddle riddler:
Through evidence gathered by the rigorously applied empirical method of looking out the bus window I note that at least a third of the graffiti I see is written in English.

Why is this Huh Assuming that significantly less than a third of the people here speak English.

Yes, weird indeed. What about the banners at football matches? Many are in English.

Well, if you write in English then you are a person of higher then average intelligence ,I guess, but if you write in Ukrainian or Russian you nothing more then a vandal.
I have noticed that two regarding graffiti being in English a lot of times. Usually those are created by groups of teens. I am almost certain of it ,because if the graffiti is large enough, someone has to stay and watch out to warn their buddies in case someone is coming and could catch them doing it. So anyway, they work in groups. And this English language thingy, I think, is a way of showing off in from of your buddies. If you write in English you are cool, if in Ukrainian you are an idiot vandalizing property!!!! Smiley)) Of course not all can do it, in fact not all can even write on the walls in grammatically correct Russian to begin with ,that might be a reason for English too  because time and again I saw graffiti in Russian with spelling mistakes – at least when they write in English most often then not they have memorized the spelling of the word they are writing. I understand what you are saying Vera.
So if I note an increase in the use of Russian or Ukrainian in graffiti, I will assume an increase in the level of self respect and national pride amongst the local scribblers Wink

Isn't it not only, that basically graffitti is an American invention and thus has to be copy-catted down to language too?
Here (Kyiv), and elsewhere I lived (Prague, Copenhagen) it's usually ghetto-American used  Tongue.
By the way, some of the 'artists' here in Kyiv are quite good - most of course rubbish as everywhere else...
