from Poland.pl:

Long lines of trucks continue to accumulate at Poland's eastern border with Ukraine, especially in the Lubelskie province.

Drivers have to wait for 20 hours to enter Ukraine in Dorohusk. The situation is comparatively better at the border crossing in Hrebenne where the queue extends for 10 hours. In Koroszczyn, at the border with Belarus, outgoing truck traffic takes 14 hours to leave Poland. Vehicles crossing into Poland from Ukraine or Belarus have considerably shorter periods of waiting. Also, passenger cars are cleared at a pace requiring only up to two hours of standing.

Following Poland's entry into the Schengen zone last December road freight traffic at the eastern border started clogging due to additional time consuming procedures and insufficient number of checkpoints.

Plane loses way after pilot error

The co-pilot flew the plane back to Heathrow
A Polish Boeing 737 which came close to hitting another aircraft over London had the wrong co-ordinates entered into the flight computer.

The pilots then failed to understand instructions given in English by controllers, the Air Accidents Investigations Branch report revealed.

The Warsaw-bound plane weaved across the skies after taking off from Heathrow last June.

The co-pilot used standby instruments to return the plane to Heathrow.

According to the report the "serious incident" developed when a "simple" error in entering the aircraft's position went undetected.

The LOT airlines co-pilot entered an easterly longitude instead of westerly, causing the electronic navigation system to shut down.

But this was only noticed by the crew once the Boeing 737 carrying 95 passengers and crew had taken off from the west London airport.

A number of the exchanges were misunderstood, probably as a result of language difficulties

AAIB report

The report said the pilot had difficulty "comprehending and communicating" with air traffic controllers and responded to instructions "slowly and erratically".

Investigators said: "A number of the exchanges were misunderstood, probably as a result of language difficulties."

It was also noted that "the pilots had little idea of their position and, after a few minutes, they were entirely dependent on air traffic controllers for their navigation".

Another aircraft was forced to change its course when the Polish plane flew too close but it was not close enough to be considered a "near miss" by investigators.

The co-pilot was forced to use standby instruments, and guided by controllers, landed the plane back at Heathrow.

The report said the incident demonstrated how reliant pilots have become on the Flight Management System.

Controllers were also criticised for failing to realise how severe the aircraft's navigational difficulties were

Austria 1-1 PolandEuro 2008 day six as it happened
Vienna, 12 June 2008

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/euro_2008/poland/7371161.stm

English referee Howard Webb awards Austria a late penalty

Poland coach Leo Beenhakker was furious with English referee Howard Webb's decision to award Austria a late penalty that gave the hosts a 1-1 draw.

Poland were leading until the 93rd minute when Ivica Vastic scored from the spot after Mariusz Lewandowski was penalised for holding Sebastian Prodl.

"Maybe he wants to show he is a big boy and has the guts to do it, I don't know," said the veteran coach.

Poland can make the last eight but need to beat already-qualified Croatia.

Roger Guerreiro netted in the first half as Poland looked comfortable but Beenhakker believes that Webb's late decision, after Lewandowski defended a free-kick by holding Prodl's shirt, was incorrect - and has effectively knocked Poland out of Euro 2008.

"I've never had a problem in 43 years of being in football but this is something I cannot understand.

"It's impossible to accept but I am working on it," he said.

"I'm very satisfied with the boys, I have no complaints about the boys.

"We don't have it in our own hands any more and the conclusion is we are out of the tournament."

Beenhakker, who has coached Ajax and Real Madrid, also claimed the draw hurt more than the defeat by Germany in their Group B opener.

"If you lose a game because they score two and you don't it's different and tough but you accept it," he said.

"Sometimes you don't get what you deserve. This hurts much more than the first match.

"It was the only situation to survive in the tournament. Austria is excited about the result."
