I've just put two translation websites through their paces, using a few lines from my journal as the English text:

"It was a humble setting for an impromptu day trip. The countryside - far from the bright yellow corn fields and blue summer sky as it appears on Ukraine's flag - reminded me more of my clothes: the sky from which cold rain was falling was the same dull grey as my jumper, and the fields as dark, muddy and worn as my jeans."

Trident/Pragma: http://www.trident.com.ua/eng/online.php

"Это было скромное урегулирование для импровизированного day путешествия. Сельская местность - далеко от ярких желтых зерновых полей и голубого летнего неба, так как это появляется на украинский флаг - напоминала меня больше моей одежды: небо, из которых холодный дождь падал, был той же тупой сединой, что и мой прыгун, и поля, как непонятно, загрязненный и носящийся как мои джинсы."

Verdict: The words are translated accurately, besides failing to translate "day". It does not pick up on ambiguities or understand context (for example тупой for dull as opposed to пасмурное, and прыгун for jumper - "one who jumps", not a sweater). The grammar isn't ideal either, in particular gender agreement (загрязненный поля for example) which is wrong more often that right.

3 stars - will produce reasonable, if not syntactical, Russian.

PROMT Company: http://www.online-translator.com

"Это было скромное урегулирование для импровизированной однодневной поездки. Сельская местность - далекий от ярких желтых областей зерна и синего летнего неба, поскольку это появляется на флаге Украины - напомнила мне больше моей одежды: небо, от которого падал холодный дождь, было тем же самым унылым серым как мой прыгун, и области столь же темные, грязные и изношенные как мои джинсы."

Verdict: A much better option than Trident. It dealt with "day trip", "on the Ukrainian flag" and "sky from which cold rain was falling" in an idiomatic way. A few mistakes, but nothing serious.

5 stars - produces good Russian, with an understanding of context. I'm certain you won't find a better free service.

I'd be happy to try out the Russian to English service, but I'll stake next month's blinchiki budget on the reliability being exactly the same.

I hope it helps.

Our son has Promt - translates German, Russian, French, Spanish and English (any variation of language too and from) - according to him it's good too.  Smiley

Thanks, Jonathan for trying them out for me. I rather suspected promt would be the better of the two having been available for years.

Nik, did you buy it on-line or source it from one of the computer shops in Odessa?

By the way, has anyone else noticed the similarity between Jon's mugshot and that of the late great Georgy R Gongadze?

They sell prompt cheap, where all the vendors sell CD's DVD's every day near Bunina and the park

Jonathan, everyone knows about Georgy R Gongadze, the founder of Pravda Newspaper. There is information all over the net. If you are interested, then wikipedia is as good a place as any to start.

A word of warning about Prompt, if you are using it to translate between Russian and English. This overworked translator used it to save some time (by editing the text which Prompt produced), but the cracks start to appear when you read whole paragraphs.

Perfect for finding out what that cutie from Kharkiv thinks of your latest photo, not so good for analysing Russo-Ukrainian economic relations.
