Maybe a curry for three (or five or more) is on the cards then!

Glad you appreciated my Rangers, Linfield and Spurs joke! All my life I have supported the Hammers. Naturally, I expected my son to do the same. Imagine, shock, horror, he arrived home from school one day and announced he was supporting Spurs! Almost a quarter of a century on, he still does. He travels down to London for all the home matches as his step-father has a corporate membership.

Good game on Tue night between Drogheda and Dinamo, pity Dinamo won 2-1 but to be fair they deserved it and well done Kaunas tonight getting a draw at Ibrox!

AN EXECUTIVE BOX AT SPURS  Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked I would rather spend 90 minutes on the Kiev metro at 8am rather than endure that  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Greetings all,

Regarding comparison of Kyiv and Singapore as cities with expats communities, kind of hard to do that, as here only 15 years ago the gates opened. You can still find "babushkas" who stay at the entrance of the buildings scanning you 24 hours per day:))))

Odessa could be better from this point of view, as it has a smaller community, the bigger there is an expat community the less she stays as a community

In any case people are the one makes a city or community...find the right people and you will find the right city to live in...

(as some inputs to BS)

Good day

Cry Cry Cry I put my hand up to failing as a parent! Believe me, I have tried many times to get my lad to see the light but he is not for turning!

For Arsenal (Gooners) supporters, I offer the following joke of the day!

Four surgeons are taking a tea break:
1st surgeon says, "Accountants are the best to operate on because when you open them up, everything inside is numbered."
2nd surgeon says, "Nope, librarians are the best. Everything inside them is in alphabetical order."
3rd surgeon says, "Well you should try electricians. Everything inside them is colour coded."
4th surgeon says, "I prefer Gooners. They're heartless, spineless, gutless and their heads and arses are interchangeable."

Hi Everyone,

Just a little thank you to everyone for your feedback - this forum is proving to be invaluable  Smiley

I have another week to decide if i move to Kiev. So fingers crossed. I am now going to investigate getting an apartment and would welcome your thoughts on which area is suitable as i dont know Kiev....this is what I am looking for:-

1/ 1 or 2 bed apartment (with good security) - sorry 2 or 3 room apartment! need space for friends to visit!

2/ central location - in a very nice, safe area with access to shops and the bonus would be if there are other expats living nearby

3/ latest mod cons - I'm a londoner used to all the trimmings - flat screen, modern, broadband internet etc - i guess i would ideally like to stay in a apart-hotel environment for the first 3 months - I wonder which hotels have such accomadation?

4/ my budget is c.$3000 p/month - may be more

If anyone can advise or tell me if my requirements are unrealistic that would be useful or point me to some agent websites that the forum recommends.

Thank you so much everyone

PS - Nina - as you seem to be the latest Newbie - how are you settling in?

I was thinking Tsarskoye Selo (Pechersk) fits his description of a perfect location.
Last I know apartments there were renting for  like $ 2000 and up.
It is just a suggestion , others here may tell you if it is as good place as it once was and if it is still within this price range. I would lookinto it. Again the plce called Tsarskoye Selo.

Hi BS,

I'm settling pretty well and am finally moving to my appartment today. For the first week I stayed at Senator, which are serviced appartments on Pirogova str, central and quiet. Breakfast was rather poor and the same every day, but you don't have to eat it.

Flat hunting proved to be more complicated than I expected. Notwithstanding that I have started looking whilst still in London and my firm used a relocation company, I still found the whole experience tiresome and annoying. My relocation agent used Park Lane estate agents, whose representative was incompetent, lazy and could not care less about any of my needs or requirements. All he wanted was for me to take the first flat at a sky high price (he gets commission from the tenant rather than l/l).

I have not seen any two bedroom flats with your requirements for less than US$4,000, but you can haggle and get the price down a bit. Your requirements are realistic and I wouldn't settle for less, although broadband and wireless internet might be a bit tricky to find.

Last Friday we had drinks with a few expats which was nice as I don't really know anyone here apart from my new colleagues and solo dinners at the restaurants every night can get rather boring.

Otherwise, Kiev is a beautiful city and people are friendly, even in some restaurants (Sunduk was not one of them).
If you have any other questions, PM me!

Sounds like you've jumped a few hoops! Guess it could be the norm and part of the journey!

I'm tempted to move to Kiev and its encouraging to hear your story. But my dilemma is that I've just spent the last 14months travelling around the world and got back to UK in June. I sympathise with the solo dinners - I recall a few of those along the way.

Thank you for your insight I will probably have more questions later.

P-N, Carlushika,

Have you tried the Indian on Gavannya St, across the road from Kumanets.

Not as good as back home but for a curry lover it's ok. it can be a bit of a hit or a miss though depending on who's cooking on the night you go.

Thanks for that. We haven't been there personally but will give it a try.

The problem is my Irina tends to give restaurants a wide berth after one bad meal when, as you rightly pointed out, it may well have been down to the chef on duty.
