....I am curious to find out how many English speaking expats reside in Kiev and whether there is a higher proportion of male versus female versus families staying.
I'm still trying to decide if i should move to Kiev and for me the expat community is crucial to help integrate. I hate the idea of staring at 4 walls in hotel/apartment at weekends.
Naturally, moving to more established expat places such as Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, Dubai would be easier but I'm not keen on moving to far from Europe.

A little more information about what you'll be doing? Obviously if your working you won't be staring at the walls.

Well, I fall into the family category... Having said that, it's what you make of it. I'm sure you'll find a lot of English speaking expats in HK; not so sure about the other places. Not so many here (native speakers), from what I see. Although there are many locals who would like to associate with and practice their English with native speakers. If you have a hobby, post here and in Kyiv Post. You'll find people. I run a volleyball league October - May, consisting of me (the token American), a Canadian, but mostly English speakers from Czech, Netherlands, and Ukraine. Associating with the locals is often more rewarding. Assuming you are working here, some companies run social activities for employees after work. Seems quite a popular thing to do with IT companies; not so sure about others. If you're teaching English for work, you'll find more English speakers than you know what to do with. Finding things to do should not be a problem.

Hello,
I am an English speaking female, relocated here three days ago for six months. So far, I have not had time to sample the local or expat community. However, I have had experience working in Moscow and Singapore and so far it seems to me that expat communities there are much wider and more sociable.

3 days ago? Yes. I guess the question mark is over the quick judgement I have made. In three days I could only judge by the feedback from expats in my office and this forum. Although, everyone is friendly, it doesn't seem that there are as many expat meetings/social events happening in Kiev on regular basis as there were in Moscow or Singapore. Please correct me, if I am wrong. For example, in Singapore you could just go to the Clarke Quay and you'd think you're somewhere in US/Scandinavia, if you crave for expat community. I also understand that a big proportion of expats here are with their families, which makes it slightly difficult for regular socialising.

Welcome Nina! You are about right in my view! Weve covered this topic a few times and most people including myself dont consider there to be much of an expat scene here in Kiev, Odessa seems much more active in that dept! Theres no specific reason why this is the case but it just seems this way. Most of us have tried the obvious places like O Brians, Golden Gate and didnt really like what we saw and dissapeared into our own worlds (and of course this site) Hello,

Welcome to the forum BS and Nina, Its great to see the forum attracting more female expats. Nina and rjm are right about Kiev being less sociable than Moscow, Singapore etc. Why it should be I don't know, perhaps its far busier and more work orientated than other places. Odessa being a seaside resort as well as a city port would obviously generate a carefree holiday atmosphere amoungst its expats. Weve covered this topic a few times and most people including myself dont consider there to be much of an expat scene here in Kiev, Odessa seems much more active in that dept!

If there is interest in meeting up, I will post on the Meetings board and see if we can arrange something. The obvious choice would be drinks after work on Friday perhaps?

RJM, don't forget I too will be in Odessa soonish. If you don't mind a quiet drink or 3, I'd like to join you, despite my being a life long supporter of the 'Appy 'Ammers. I can introduce you to the Odessa branches of Spurs, Glasgow Rangers and Linfield supporters too!! Nik, I told RJM that if anyone know a half decent curry house in Odessa, it would be you. So far, in my experience, those I have ventured into taste nothing like what we are used to in UK. However, that said, I read somewhere that Indian curry in UK is especially made to cater for the British tastebuds. My ex-employers have two Indian offices and those amongst the staff who had to make the trip to India confirmed the tastes are very, very different.
