OK, so I told the guys that I would post a few clips of Everything is Illuminated.  It seems that this video introduces many people to Ukraine, as it's commonly brought up when I mention to someone that I'm going to Ukraine!

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/tSUOYY4oukc&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/tSUOYY4oukc&rel=1</a>

You MUST see the rest of the first clip!!  The scene is great, and ends with a great "Welcome to Ukraine!"  Smiley

No sounds?  Strange!

Here's the transcription (taken from Elijah's site):

Jonathan: I don't eat meat.
Alex: How can you not eat meat?
Jonathan: I just don't.
Alex: [to Grandfather, in Russian] He says he does not eat meat.
Grandfather: [to Alex, in Russian] What?
Alex: No meat?
Jonathan: No meat.
Alex: Steak?
Jonathan: No...
Alex: Chickens!
Jonathan: No...
Alex: And what about the sausage?
Jonathan: No, no sausage, no meat!
Alex: [to Grandfather, in Russian] He says he does not eat any meat.
Grandfather: [to Alex, in Russian] Not even sausage?
Alex: [to Grandfather, in Russian] I know!
Grandfather: [to Alex, in Russian] What is wrong with him?
Alex: What is wrong with you?
Jonathan: Nothing, I just don't eat meat!

It's a movie about an American who goes to Ukraine in search of a woman who saved his grandfather.  I'm watching it for the first time as we speak.  Smiley

There's only no sound because I forgot my headphones, I'm sure the clip is working fine. I'll check the rest out soon, it looks interesting. It had to be about Ukraine as soon as I saw the tracksuit and kepka :-)

Actually watchig all of this remindied me of Borat movie.
By the way, did you know that the first part of "Borat" was actually filmed in Romania, not Kazakhstan Smiley)

This is based on a very funny novel by Jonathan Safran Foer. The character of Alex is so true to life of what I have seen of my students in the past few months. Good book and film adaptation ...
