hello Ladies & gents,

I'm arriving on Wed and my contacts have supplied me with 3 apartments to consider to stay for a few days whilst i look for a permanent place.

I could do with some forum assistance on whether these apartment locations are good or if there are better areas to consider. My office will be based in Pimonenko street, but i am not concerned if i am close to the office or not...I'm after a safe, nice location with access to shops & restaurants as I will be on my lonesome until i get to meet some of you!!

Thanks for any assistance!

The first one is close to the Golden Gate area.  You're in center and only short walk to where you can catch a bus only 2-3 stops from office.  Can walk to either office or Maidan in less than 15 minutes if you are of a mind to.  Nice area (IMO) with lots of government buildings, convenient to Sofiskiy, GG, work and Kreshaatyk.

Second one looks nice.

Third one is a bit close to the train tracks.

If it was me - I would go for the first, but good to check them all out if you have time.

I`d go for the first one as well ... but I have only been here for 5 months so take care with anything I write :-)

The first one also has the advantage of being close to an expat bar at Golden Gate which can be useful for the first few months when you want someone to talk to in English (unless of course you already speak Russian).

Hope you have a pleasant journey here on Wednesday.

Joe

As you say it's temporary, my advice is to take the one closest to your office, to take the stress out of your commute while you settle in. If you decide that you don't want to stay, ask your colleagues to help you find another one, or to give you a bit more information about the other two. By that time you'll have an idea about what you would like to have in the flat (view of a park, security on the ground floor.....) and you'd like to be close to (an expat bar, the train station etc.)

Just to be clear, when I say Golden Gate the reference is to the metro station, historical exhibit and general area.  Picking your apartment for its proximity to a bar seems to be an odd criterion unless you need the beer selection and want the crutch of something like a Brit pub close by.

ecocks ... I only mentioned the bar in passing ... I was a bit miserable for the first couple of months here as I had no one to talk to outside work for days on end. It can make a difference to the first few months ... although that is only my simple opinion of course. Of course back then I did not know this site existed.

No problem.

I went there and O'Brien's a bit at first too, but I wouldn't want an apartment near there.  In hindsight it slowed me down on "getting into" being in Ukraine. The Restarska address (the one I liked) is convenient to the center zone, so GG, O'B, McD, Drum and others are all within 15 minute walk.  More than that though, the opera is there, dozens of coffeehoues and restaurants, bookstores, bus routes, metro entrance, etc.

Hi,

I've taken your advice I'm staying at the first apartment and now I begin the hunt for somewhere more permanent!

Thanks to all!

When you are safely ensconced in your temporary apartment, you can then pick up the Aviso newspaper or check out on-line, for it is full of rental apartments at all prices and districts of Kyiv.
