Yup, just another one of our good guy USA political figure heads, getting in a jam.  Those guys are so above the law always until they are completely trapped.  John Edwards is a past figure, so not abig deal to most americans.  I just wonder why all of our leaders are corrupt!  How about politcal leaders dealing with real problems, and fixing them to really make things better... I guess that is way too big to handle, and canot be achieved with any and all existing government officials.

Edwards might be a past figure but the info is still relevant as he could have become a vice -president just 4 years ago.
Being human is a luxury for people in his position, as they pay with their careers for being "human".
The worst to me is that his wife had cancer but stood by him during all his campaign nevertheless.
I feel sorry for her and the kids though.

Exactly. In his own words :""I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic."

When are Americans going to get it?  They're politicians, for chrissakes, not saints.   I honestly don't care about their private life as long as they're not outlandishly hypocritical, and if they do the freaking job they're paid to do.  Of course, they don't, though Edwards was better than most.  Maybe not as good when serving, but better now that he's left, IMHO.

If you want a freaking saint in Congress, vote for Mother Teresa.  Oh wait, she's dead.  But in that state, she wouldn't do a worse job than the current crew.  Maybe a priest?  Oh wait, many of them have their own ethical challenges.  Or maybe Pope Benedict?  Oh wait, there's the issue of his past in Nazi Germany.  Oh well, we're stuck with the fact that they are all fallable human beings.  Live with it.   Roll Eyes

As a European I cannot help but agreeing 100% with the all of your words.
I luckily know enough of American history (and American "symbolism") to understand why in the 21st century such irrelevant events (because it is politically irrelevant if someone, is having an affair) are looked down with (fake) contempt in America. They will never get it, they will keep being unable to divide the private life of a politician from his professional life.

Do Americans ever wonder why their reactions towards such facts (Clinton, Edwards, many others...) are often ridicolized by Europeans? We basically cannot understand why do not you mind your own business...

Luckily in Europe a President (Sarkozy) can still be free to dump his wife and get married with a model, increasing both his own popularity and his partner one.

Vera, does make you vomiting that a politician has an affair? are not you overreacting?

Sorry english is not my native language...are you arguing there is a direct connection between having an affair and "corruption"? or maybe you are talking about moral corruption? and who set the moral laws in this world?

Absolutely agree!  Edwards roll in the hay while his wife has cancer is tacky certainly, but corrupt?  Give me a break.  The former presidents son-in-law being one of the richest man in the country (here) or the wife of the biggest mayor in the country one of the richest women in the country (russia), now that is something that really smells corrupt!

I just remembered a good one in relation to discussion quoted below. It goes like this:

"It is said that when Moses in his rage smashed the tablets of the Ten Commandments, everybody rushed to grab a piece.

Of course the rich and the politicians were the first. They got all the good pieces on which were inscribed, "Commit adultery", "lie", "steal". The poor and all the rest got only the pieces that said, " Thou shalt not"," Thou shalt not". Grin Grin
