A little thread to find out in your opinion the 3 greatest people YOUR country ever produced and in your opinion (briefly) why?

Mine are as follows:

1.  Sir Winston Churchill - Charasmatic, dogmatic, educated, political strong man who stood up to be counted when his country needed him.  (His War Diaries are an excellent read).

2.  Isambard Kingdon Brunell - An engineer lightyears in front of his time - simply an engineering genious.

3.  Professor JRR Tolkien CBE - A writer known around the world who enthrauled many a child with his literary genious and magnificent imagination.

I need to think about this one but the bottom two, without any doubt -

Tony BlIAr
Gordon Brown

Hmmm, tough call.

My Picks:
1. Thomas Jefferson - one of the primary leaders and political idealologues of the American Revolution
2. Martin Luther King, Junior - civil rights activist who made millions of people think about what needed to be done to achieve a more equal society
3. Albert Einstein - scientist, out-of-the-box thinker

National Poll Results:
1. Ronald Reagan - Former President (end of Cold War, economic recovery, return to basics approach)
2. Abraham Lincoln - Former President during the American Civil War
3. Martin Luther King - see above

Interestingly, George W, Bush came in (drumroll please) #6 - ahead of Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Elvis Presley, Oprah, Franklin D. Roosevel, Thomas Jefferson, Albert Einstein and, well, several hundred million others.

                                                                        Huh

My choice was a personal one! Tony and Gordon stole a huge chunk of my private pension while during this time they TWICE improved Parliamentary pensions and inflation proofed them.

A quick google will show many have reason to be angry but Teflon Tony is one happy chappy.

So-called "Socialism" really turned out to be a chapter or three from "Animal Farm".

I have voted for both Thatcher and Blair in my time. I have no policital aliances, just vote for the ones I considered best for the country at the time regardless of the party they are in - that said 99% of politicians are mealy-mouthed, weak, insincere, hypocritical manipulaters of the truth, hiding behind party whips instead of representing their constituants as they are intended to do or voting with their conscience, so there is never much to choose between any of them.   Roll Eyes Shocked Sad Undecided Lips sealed

Lucky we are friends - I don't know which is the biggest insult, to be Tony (Stan Laurel) Blair or George W (Oliver  Hardy) Bush.  Wink Cheesy Grin Shocked

Nice one! Tom Paine is a good one and serves only to prove that a Top Three is so difficult and unfair really. There must be thousands and thousands of deserving people, some still with us and some, hopefully, playing their harps beautifully in a huge orchestra in paradise.

Others, springing to mind and closer to home (ie our forum), for want of a better description, are :

Gareth Jones - http://www.garethjones.org/  - I am heavily involved in Holodomor recognition in UK
Georgiy Gongadze - http://www.gongadze.org/case.eng.htm - The bravest of the brave journalists
Lev Yashin - Russian goalkeeper (another true gentleman of the Stanley Matthews mould
