From time to time - I come across some interesting sites where photos of life in the Soviet Union
are posted by visitors and inhabitants of the USSR before it broke up in 1991.
If you think shopping in modern day Ukraine is a challenge, just look at the long queues and shortages
of shops back in the USSR.

Never mind bar code readers, credit cards and PIN numbers - The Abacus was at the cutting edge
of technology of retail shops in the former Soviet Union:

To say Soviet food shops were spartan is putting it mildly:

Communisme and the Soviet days were perhaps not too bad after all. Think about it, free education, health care, guaranteed a job and a home, low crime rates. Flip side, long lines and rationing of goods, but perhaps some people were more happy then than now? These days everything gets more materialistic, not necessarily a good thing. Now you have crime, drugs, etc. Just look at Moscow and St Pete with high crime rates and corruption. Kyiv is still ok and I hope it stays that way.  Undecided

Yes, I suppose you could feel some nostalgia for the old Soviet Union. Anyway heres some
more classic pics.

Waiting for the bus - no Coke a Cola adverts just communist party slogans on the billboards.

This photos so surreal its unbelievable.

Your in the Red Army now son.

We keep the Red flag flying near.

Quick reminder of what the Russian ruble looked like - was the exchange rate really
pegged at $1 US dollar to the russian ruble back then ?

You just cannot get away from Lenin even on your wedding day - is that the flag
of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic in the background ?

Soviet poster exhorting all russians to give Uncle Sam a few words of wisdom
from your little red book.

Of course the wonderbra was still a mystery for many women in the Soviet Union:

The Soviet Union extends fraternal greetings to its extraterrestial comrades,
seen here on a goodwill visit to Moscow from Alfa Centauri.

Yet more photos of the USSR.

Here we see the first wave of Soviet bombers - ready to overwhelm NATO's defenses.
