On location, keeping an eye on events

As the History Today section will be incomplete without mentioning the Cossacks.
Heres a legendary character made famous by the russian author Nikolai Gogol - you probably recall the film
where Taras and his cossacks - after helping the Poles repel the Ottoman invasion of Ukraine - is betrayed by
the Polish king who turns his cannon on the cossacks. Swearing revenge against the Poles, Taras chops off
the Polish kings hand with his sword and vows to drive the Poles out of Ukraine.
So begins the long bitter struggle against the Poles with tales of love and betrayal as one of Taras's sons is
seduced by the daughter of the Polish governor of Dubno.  Shocked

Anyway a great ripping yarn of daring do with those vagabonds of the Steppes in the 16th century.

Heres the Hollywood version of Taras Bulba:

California, Mexico and Argentina.

Still, I enjoyed the movie when it was released around 1962/3 in UK. Of course, 45 years later, movies, their productions methods, special effects, overall quality and locations used have changed a great deal.

I don't remember the movie (I'll have to download i) but I've been told many Ukrainians find it insulting.

They mixed Ukrainian culture with that of other countries.

I was told there was a church scene where the music was Georgian and not Ukrainian

I'm told the new Taras Bulba film is much better and obviously more up to date authentically
than the hollywood version.
With many of the battle scenes shot on location such as at Kamyanets-Podilsky
in Ukraine.
The only draw back is its in russian - still perhaps the DVD to the film might include
english subtitles.

Well, 45 years ago, I wasn't an honourary Ukrainian then and quite ignorant about the history of this beautiful country. Now, of course, I know better.

I do have to put my hand up to wearing the dreaded winkle pickers around 1963 (these days aka Ukrainian pixie shoes).
