I mentioned before in my earlier posts about the Battle of Friedland 1807 refought in Kaliningrad on sunday 17th June 2007.
Well heres a very good all action video of the battle fought between Napoleon Bonaparte's French army and Tsar Alexanders Russian Imperial army at Pravdinsk near Kaliningrad, Russia.

Regulars of my back to the Napoleonic wars column will be aware that a re-enactment of the crossing and Battle of Berezina in Belarus took place this weekend.
The battle follows a memorial service and reburial of the bodies of over 200 of Napoleons soldiers uncovered in a mass grave - a stark reminder of the cost in lives of Napoleons disastrous campaign in Russia 195 years ago.
Amoung those attending the ceremony were the French foregn ministry and France's ambassador to Belarus.

Radio Belarus news item:
http://www.radiobelarus.tvr.by/eng/news.asp?id=5917&date=23.11.2007%2013:17:00

Might even appear on their national news service.

Well with Kiev and many places in Ukraine enduring subzero temperatures today. Spare a thought for those battle hardened Russians fighting off Napolean's La Grande Armee in Belarus yesterday.

Looks like a Christmas truce is a long way off yet, as the winter campaign moves to a region near St Petersburg on 9th December.

Last weekend the Napoleonic wars moved to the Czech Republic where Napoleons french army faced a combined Russian and Austrian force on the field of Austerlitz.
Here Napoleon's La Grande Armee achieved a crushing victory over the imperial austrian and russian armies.

Fortunately cameramen embedded within the French army recorded the event.

Observe the French soldier who runs forwards to fire his musket - you will notice it doesn't fire every time - its the era of flintlock muskets - and this gave rise to the popular expression - a flash in the pan.

With the russian parliamentary and presidential elections grabbing the headlines as the power struggle for the Kremlin gathers pace.
Its all too easy to forget a 200 year old power struggle for european supremacy being replayed across western and eastern europe, as the forces of Napoleon and his allies are locked in a bitter struggle against the Hapsburgs of the Austro-Hungarian empire, Prussia and Tsarist Imperial Russia.
Only last year - Napoleon Bonaparte entered Berlin after inflicting a crushing defeat against the Prussian army at Jena on October 14th 2006.

Well what an exciting year 2007 turned out to be if your following the fortunes of the Napoleonic Wars as recreated by various Napoleonic groups in Russia, Poland, the Baltic States, etc.
Of course the French and Russian armies have now retired to winter quarters ( meaning they will be brushing off their uniforms, sewing on lost buttons and cleaning out their muskets as well as cavorting with loose women  Shocked in the ale houses and taverns of St Petes, Riga and Moscow )

and what of Napoleon Bonaparte, I hear you say. Looks like he will be out of work during the winter months.
Fear not - the Emperor of the French can be found appearing in adverts for Imperial Bank on russian television.
Just as well really as he will be incurring a lot of expenses with 1812 coming up soon.   Cool

Can you believe it - Back to the Napoleonic Wars gets 1207 hits and rising.

Just to show how pan European the bicentennial battles of the Napoleonic wars have become. 2007 saw the French invading their former ally, Spain - before moving on to defeat Englands oldest ally in Europe, Portugal.
Incensed by this outrage, Britain dispatches an experditionary force to the spainish peninsular ( in 1808 - 2008 ) under the command of Sir Arthur Wellesley ( later to become the Duke of Wellington ) - thus opening up a second front against Napoleon.
Preperations for these events are already well advanced with preliminary skirmishes between the French & Spainish armies already taking place in Spain.

The 200th anniversary of the Battle of Austerlitz was refought back in December 2005 in the cold winter snow.

Czech tv station CT24 recorded the 3 hour re-enactment, theirs a cast of thousends in
this film which is perhaps the best tv coverage of a Napoleonic re-enactment, ever.

Heres the current website address for the Battle of Austerlitz, 2005 re-enactment:

http://www.ceskatelevize.cz/vysilani/10099029347-rekonstrukce-bitvy-u-slavkova

Finally if you want to save and retain the recording on your PC then use one of the Free video download managers. Most give you a free trial before having to pay for the full version. I use CoCSoft Stream Down as my download manager.
BEST TO DOWNLOAD this recording AS SOON AS POSSIBLE - as I have no idea how long it will remain available from the
Czech TV website.

Just when you thought it was all quite on the Eastern front.
Fighting breaks out in Latvia where advance units of Napoleons french army come under
concerted attack from the Tsar's Russian Imperial troops, determined to avenge their
humiliating defeat at Friedland, last year.

Fortunately news cameras were on hand to witness events as the Russians descend on an
unfortunate French garrison who ( refusing to surrender ) pay dearly for their defiance as survivors are executed, before russian troops indulge in the usual looting and pillaging.  Shocked

News film includes scenes of French soldiers being shot by firing squad.

Last weekends TV news report:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnhD_xrYI6Q&feature=user

Apparently its not the first time French and Russian troops have been fighting so early
in Latvia as can be seen by this russian Channel One news report from January 2007.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-4xaAjheVs&feature=user

The Napoleonic conflict in Latvia have included a number of notable street fights as
witnessed by this battle on the streets of Riga back in May 2007:

I like this stuff, Camp - even if I really don't know where to find it all.
However, as for 1801, I'd like to see something from 2nd April, Copenhagen roads (first unprovoked attack on Copenhagen by the English).
And especially, I'd like 1807 supplemented with links and pics from 2nd- 4th September (bombardment of Copenhagen). The 'Britishers raped the town and robbed our navy', to translate a narrative from then. However, the good side is that Danes planted 18.000 oak trees, so we'd be able to build a new navy by 1990 and conquer England (again); technology changed in the meantime, however; so now we have fine forests, thanks to England  Roll Eyes

Hi Claus,
Glad you like it - my Back to the Napoleonic wars thread seems to have taken off lately, although
when I first started this post - it was just as a bit of pure escapism from the trials and tribulations
of everyday life in Ukraine.
It will certainly not suit all tastes but judging by the number of hits - their are certainly more
escape artists out their wanting to get away from it all.
Of course what makes the Napoleonic Wars so interesting is it was a conflict ( starting off as
a Revolution in France ) that quickly engulfed much of Europe during the late 18th & early
19th century; in fact you could almost consider it the first world war.
The russians do call it the 1st Patriotic War with the Great Patriotic War being the 2nd World War
and of course its the background to Tolstoys great novel, War and Peace.
The second amazing thing is that historical re-enactment ( the russians call it reconstruction ) has
taken off so dramatically in Russia and countries of the former Soviet Union including the former
Eastern Bloc states, since glasnost and perestroica.
As your probably aware from the Russia today documentary, re-enactment attracts many people from
all walks of life, factory workers, bank managers, clerks, artists, business executives, policemen and
the FSB  Shocked - nah only kidding on that one.

But returning to the Napoleonic Wars in Denmark. As you so rightly say Claus, those terrible
British sea dogs led by Admiral James Gambier carried out a preventive strike on the Danish capitol,
Copenhagen.
Napoleon Bonaparte was lording it over much of Europe back in 1807, having won great victories
over the Austro-Hungarians at Austerlitz in 1805, Prussia a year later at Jena and finally
Russia at Friedland in June 1807. Forcing the Russian Tsar, Alexander to sue for peace at the
treaty of Tilsit banning all British goods from russian ports.
With most of Europe in Napoleon's back pocket, the Lords of the Admiralty in London, feared
neutral Denmark would fall like a ripe apple to French aggression.
Britian had already forestalled a previous planned invasion of England by Napoleon in 1805 by
destroying the Franco-Spainish fleet at Trafalgar.
Britain was naturally reluctant to see another grand fleet like the ships owned by the Danish
navy fall into French hands.
Of course its open to much debate and conjecture whether Napoleon ever had any designs on
the Danish fleet.
Anyway as September 2007 was the 200th anniversary of the bombarding of Copenhagen and
the seizure of the Danish fleet by the British.

Heres the Danish tv reports of the event:
http://www.dr.dk/NETTV/Update/2007/09/01/20070901145040.htm

TV2 report:
