Does anyone know. please...how much a decent pair of prescription glasses might cost me in Kiev?
Do they do anti-glare coating? Where is THE place to buy the glasses?
Thank you very much!

Don't know where THE PLACE is but there are more optometrists than I am used to back in the states.  Twice they have examined the workmanship on my glasses (bi-focals, AG, AUV) and immediately commented that they could tell it wasn't Ukrainian work.  I had two pair made before coming to Ukraine and brought my presciption with me.  If your prescription is basic, I would not worry about it, but I have trouble getting mine at some places in the states so thought it best to get them there.  BTW, glasses here seem a lot less expensive for basic lenses/frame than back home.

I have to agree with Ed about the costs. I had an eye test in Odessa using the latest equipment, the likes of which I have never seen in UK. It took all of 60 seconds and consisted of a number of images on screen which you look at through something like a pair of binoculars. God knows how it worked. You do not have to do anything, just watch the images. From this, I was given a prescription in Russian, took it over to an optician, chose two frames, one for reading/PC glasses and one for everyday wear including driving. Result - best pairs of glasses I have ever had. Total cost, less than $100 for the two.

I got mine at Lux Optica.  There are at least two locations in town, likely more.  The one I went to is between Arsenalna metro and Salut Hotel.  The optomitrist there knows a *little* English.  At least the one there 1.5 years ago.

I have a fairly complex prescription, for progressive bi-focals.  (I could have kept it simple, with regular bi-focals, or two regular pairs.  But didn't).  Because of the complexity, it took four weeks and were made in Germany.  But at a cost of $450, it was way less than what I paid in the states $700+.  And there's no 20% tax on that USA cost!

Wonderful glasses, by the way...

Last November before leaving NZ I went to an optometrist (who I had seen 3 years previously for a check up) in my hometown.

He has equipment similar to the items Carlusha mentions.
Also retinal photographs are taken and displayed on a 17" LCD screen.

After the examination, which revealed no problems other than normal loss of focal ranges due to age,
I was asked what glasses I used at present? “1.50 magnification reading glasses costing 35 grivna (NZD8.50) at Odessa markets.

Were they comfortable? Yes. Did I have any problems reading with them? No.
I was then told that, provided I had regular checkups (yearly) there was no problem in continuing to use them rather than the USD400.00 glasses that they supplied.
