I would like to live in L'viv or south of the city in a ski town. I would like to teach English to make a bit of money while there. I would also like to meet and associate with Poles to practice my Polish language skills. I plan to learn Ukrainian, but think it will take some time as I am still getting used to the alphabet. I will need a flat to rent. I plan to drive my car from England this summer. Any comments on my plans??? David (still in Bournemouth, UK)
PS. I have been to Poland five times with my car, and to L'viv once. It is an old beater and does not attract much attention.

My only reservation would be how you plan to earn money - is there much demand for English teachers in small western Ukrainian towns? Or would you commute to Lviv? What language will you communicate in, do lvivtsy speak Polish?

It's a great plan though, and one I'm envious of - best of luck!

Polish community in western Ukraine is probably about 300 000 people.Lviv is historical polish city, before 2nd World War very important cultural center. Now, when I'm in Lviv, I'm using to talk to people in polish - and 90% not only understand but they speak also (with very nice, specific accent we know from old movies of fifties-sixties)

Drop a note to moscow_editor on here and ask her how Ternopil and the surronding area looks for independent TEFL teachers.

There are some schools in Lviv and you can find a little bit of info on the website TryUkraine.com.

Good luck.

Lviv could be attractive as a market for English language teaching. More and more hi-tech Kiev-based companies open their regional offices in Lviv. Euro2012 should be an additional reason to look closer on Lviv.
