International Women's Day in Ukraine

International Women’s Day is a national holiday in Ukraine. The origins of its celebration go back to Soviet times. March 8th became an official holiday in 1965 in USSR, Ukraine has kept in since.

Originally it was a holiday promoting equality and freedom for all women. But, in late Soviet Union, it evolved into some sort of Mother’s Day, but not only for mothers — grandmothers, daughters, sisters too! It doesn’t have the political message anymore and celebrates just the beauty, love and kindness of Ukrainian women.

The main dish of the week is mlyntsi — thin pancakes or crepes with various fillings and sauces.  It is believed that round yellow mlyntsi represent the Sun itself.
