Guide to Independence Day in Ukraine 2016

Independence Day is a national holiday celebrated in each and every Ukrainian city. This year Ukraine celebrates an anniversary – 25 years of independence! Of course, there will be no grand and pompous celebrations among the crisis and warfare, but there are still some celebrations. Here’s a complete guide to the most interesting events all over Ukraine!

 

Kyiv

Military parade

Maidan Nezalezhnosti, 10:00

The military parade is a main event of an Independence Day. It starts at 10 in the morning at Khreschatyk street and will be broadcasted live on TV. This year more than 4000 of Ukrainian Armed Forces, National Guard, Police and Border Service will showcase more than 200 pieces of military equipment.

 

March of the Undefeated

12.00-13.00, Bessarabska Square to Mykhalyvska church

This march is an alternative to the main military parade. It’s run by volunteers, relatives of military who died in the ATO, military medics and other people who help Ukrainian military.

 

Vyshyvanka run

9:00, Rusanivska embankment

Charity run in traditional Ukrainian shirts will raise money for Kyiv schools. Participants can chose to run 500m, 5km or 10km distance.

Independence fest

11:00-23:00, Parkovka space, Izumska street

Music, theater, literature stages, handmade fair and food court from Master Chef contestants. Line-up: Gapochka, Zapaska, Viviene Mort, Odyn v Kanoe and more!

 

Independence Day fest on VDNH

9:30 to 21:00 at Expocenter (Glushkova 1)

 

Pechersk Vernisage

12:00 to 20:00 on Mazepy street

 

Arts and Crafts fest on Andriivsky Uzviz

Independence Day Concerts:

14:00  a folk concert in a City Garden near the Mariinsky palace.

15:00-20:00 concert on Kontraktova ploscha features the military orchestra and other bands

21:00 — a big Symphony orchestra concert on Maidan Nezalezhnosti. All performers were born after 1991, in independent Ukraine.

 

Lviv

Lviv is sometimes called the heart of Ukraine or a culture capital of Ukraine. It’s a great city to visit on the Independence Day.

 

Etnovyr festival

Etnovyr festival is a celebration of folk culture from all over the world. The participants are dancers, singers, designers and chefs from Ukraine, India, Mexico, France, Portugal, Italy, Czech Republic and more countries.

Parajanov Festival

August 19-24, Suputnyk centre and Levandivsky park

The fest is dedicated to the famous Ukrainian director Sergiy Parajanov.

 

My little independence festival

13:00, Khmelnytsky park

Traditional Kossack entertainment, Ukrainian fair, big concert of rok bands from Lviv.

 

 

Odessa

Okean Elzy concert

20:00, Chornomorets Stadium

We can say the Ocean Elzy concert is a main event in Odessa for the Independence Day.

 

Vyshyvanka Festival

20-24 August

Vyshyvanka fest has scheduled a number of events: Vyshyvanka run, car parade, live music and colourful photo zones.

 

Kozatsky Gostyny Festival

23-24 August, Derybasivska street

Concert, arts and crafts fair, master classes on Ukrainian martial arts, traditional Ukrainian food, Ukrainian designers, etc.

 

Dnipro

Traditional Vyshyvanka Run starts by the Opera Theater at 9:00. Adults can run 3 or 5 km distance.

Aviation show Vilne Nebo is the main event for the day in Dnipro. The festival is scheduled 12:00-22:00 in Mayske village. The audience has a chance to see more than 10 helicopters and planes. Skydivers will take part in a show, too.
