Night Clubs

Ukrainian nightlife

Either you are a night life addict or just hang out from time to time, Ukrainian night clubs satisfy your thirst for drive and fun. There are no colossal megadance halls as in London or in Berlin suburbs. The local establishments commonly have rather limited space, though a few dance floors, a chill out zone and a bar. So, their philosophy extends over dancing purpose and targets those who are looking for spending good time with communicating, drinking and dancing. Each club does its best to distinguish by its design and conception, so you may enjoy really original ideas there.

Kiev is the definite leader of the night entertainment industry year around, but in summer the night life capital moves to Odessa. Its open-air clubs have become a legend. Lately a few new establishments have appeared on Kiev beaches as well, but they are likely not to threaten the leader.

Taking the great variety of the night clubs formats, let’s try to structure them in some way:

Night clubs categories

The budget places are located close to the universities campuses mostly or in the low-middle class districts. Their audience is people of 16-25 mostly oriented on contemporary electronic music trends. Some of such places became legendary by welcoming novice music bands and popular DJs (e.g. close to The National Technical University or The National Aviation University in Kiev). Some of these clubs are poorly air-conditioned and lack free space.

The entrance fee on average doesn’t exceed UAH 50 for female and UAH 80 for male. Some days on a week are free for girls. The average bill fluctuates within UAH 100-200, the middle-price cocktails are about UAH 55-70.

Commonly the budget clubs lack relevant entrance face-control that effect you may meet kids under 16, conflict-prone the Caucasians and some inadequate people. Besides, the securities may behave bluntly, provoking some visitors to physical conflict. Beware of pick pocketing and thefts of purses and cell phones as well.

The middle-rank clubs is the most popular category in big cities here. Their clientele are rather motley: from 18-years old students to 40-years old middle-level managers. That effects music styles from hits of the 80-s to contemporary electronic music, but pop hits dominate to meet all tastes. Djs’ and face-control service proficiency define level of popularity of a place. Some of them are completely personal endorsement oriented (e.g. ‘Petrovich’ for generation of the 70-s).

The entrance fee is up to UAH 80-90 for women and UAH 120 for men. It varies according to a day of the week and may be zero for ladies on the least popular days or time. The average bill here reaches UAH 200-300 per person. You can taste the cocktails of middle price-range at about UAH 75-85.

Similar to some budget clubs, the establishments of this category may also suffer from thefts and too aggressive security.

The top clubs are not so reachable even if you are not short with money. They justify their definition as ‘clubs’ by providing with severe entrance face-control. Sometimes they even overdo, affecting a number of complains on the relevant forums. The strict order may be justified by caring about their clientele, most of whom are well-known people not just in show business, but in politics as well.

The top-rank establishments are concentrated in the very centre of the cities (or on the prestigious beaches – as regards Odessa). Their investors don’t save on decoration and creative ideas. World-known Djs and music bands are welcomed here to perform for a party. These places are aimed to be glam in any detail – in interior, music residents, cuisine, and public, especially the girls – the most splendid you can meet in the night life places here.

The entrance fee isn’t of key importance here due to the guests overbalance by their bills. So far, girls often have free access (having passed face-control, of course) or not more than UAH 100-150. Male should be ready to pay from UAH 200 for entrance and an overage bill starts from UAH 300-400.

The clubs for the LGBT community. Due to Ukraine is very conservative as regards freedom of sexual orientation, special places for gay people are not widely promoted here. There are definitely few specialized clubs of the middle-rank price category in Kiev. Audience of the elite clubs is also rather tolerant (to reasonable extension) to such people. Anyway, the latter are not recommended to highlight their sexual peculiarities deliberately elsewhere in night clubs, excepting the special ones.

Excepting Odessa top beach clubs, fees for visiting night clubs in other big cities are 30-50% lower than in the capital.

Useful tips for clubgoers

There are a few useful tips for those who are going to experience Ukrainian night life:

* Night clubs usually operate from 11 p.m. till 4-6 a.m.
* Don't forget to take about UAH 300-1000 (depending on the place range) in cash with you not to face search for ATM late at night (your credit card may be not accepted in a club as they often argue it ‘by technical reasons’).
* If you are limited with money, it is reasonable to eat before visiting the club. Their cooking is far from perfection, overpriced though.
* Look over the bill and check the change.
* If you are interested in taking a seat for a company, care about it beforehand. It is a problem to find a free table at peak time.
* Any smoking (including hookah) is forbidden in public places in Ukraine. (Though, we guess the night clubs sort it out in someway).
* Ukraine night life may have hidden threats common all over the world: drug dealing, prostitution, pick pocketing, fraud of various kind. This country is not better or worse than the others in this term. Just don’t lose common sense while partying here.
